Shed Base Installation in Dorset: Getting the Foundation Right

Shed base installation in Dorset is one of those jobs that homeowners often try to skip or cut corners on - and it is almost always the reason a garden building fails early. At Hambledons, we install bases for sheds, summerhouses, garages, and greenhouses across North Dorset, including Stalbridge, Gillingham, Sherborne, Hazelbury Bryan, and the villages in between. Get the base right, and your building will last. Get it wrong, and no amount of quality timber above it will save you...

Why Shed Base Installation in Dorset Matters More Than You Might Think

North Dorset's soils vary considerably from one village to the next. The free-draining chalk of the higher ground around Iwerne Minster and Fontmell Magna behaves very differently from the heavy clay of the Blackmore Vale near Sturminster Newton and Child Okeford. Clay soils shrink in dry summers and swell in wet winters. Without a proper base, a shed placed directly on this kind of ground will shift, rack, and start to rot within a few years.

A well-installed base keeps your building level, keeps moisture away from the timber, and gives the structure somewhere solid to sit for decades rather than seasons. It is not glamorous work, but it is the difference between a garden building that holds its value and one that becomes an expensive problem.

Types of Shed Base We Install

There is no single right answer when it comes to shed bases. The best option depends on the size of your building, your soil type, your budget, and how permanent you want the installation to be. At Hambledons, we offer four main types.

Concrete bases are the most common choice for larger or heavier structures such as garages, workshops, and substantial summerhouses. A concrete base is solid, permanent, and requires very little maintenance once laid. It is the strongest option available and suits any building that is going to see regular use or store heavy equipment.

Concrete block bases offer a stable and cost-effective alternative to a full concrete pour. Individual concrete blocks or piers are set at regular intervals across the footprint of the building, creating a level grid of support points. This approach is quicker to install than a full slab and can be a sensible choice for mid-sized sheds and garden rooms.

Timber bases on composite bearers are a popular option for standard garden sheds. Pressure-treated timber is installed on composite bearers, which means the timber never sits directly on the ground. This prevents moisture from wicking up into the base and dramatically extends the lifespan of the structure. It is a flexible, practical solution that works well on reasonably level ground.

Plastic grid bases are a lightweight, permeable option that suits smaller sheds and situations where drainage is a priority. The interlocking grid system allows water to pass through rather than pool beneath the building. They are also a more eco-conscious choice and can be disassembled and moved if needed.

What Happens if You Skip Professional Shed Base Installation

It is worth being direct about this. A shed placed on uneven or unprepared ground will start to cause problems quickly. Doors that will not close properly are usually the first sign. Then comes floor bounce, then gaps appearing in the cladding, then rot working its way up from the base. By the time most people call us, they are looking at a building that has lost years of its useful life.

The other common mistake is underestimating the ground preparation required. A level-looking garden is rarely actually level once you start digging. Roots, buried rubble, and variations in soil density all create problems for a base that has not been properly surveyed and prepared before installation begins.
