Why the Strawberry Moon Was So Special

This year’s Strawberry Moon 2025 appeared especially low in the southern sky — a rare event not seen since 2006 and not expected again until 2043, according to astronomers.

Members of the Dorset Echo Camera Club were quick to take advantage of the clear skies. Hang Ross photographed the glowing moon above Durdle Door, while Gary Jacobs captured a striking view of it over Old Harry Rocks. Meanwhile, David Prosser glimpsed the lunar display while walking through Weymouth Harbour.

The Meaning Behind the Name "Strawbery Moon"

The Strawberry Moon doesn’t owe its name to its colour. Instead, it traces its origins to the Algonquin tribes of North America, who marked June’s full moon as the beginning of strawberry harvesting season. In European tradition, it’s also called the ‘Rose Moon’ or the ‘Hot Moon’.
