The Dorset summer reading challenge has officially returned this summer, inviting families to explore the magical bond between books and nature. From 5 July, Dorset Library Service joins The Reading Agency’s national 2025 Summer Reading Challenge, themed Story Garden – Adventures in Nature and the Great Outdoors..

What is the Dorset summer reading challenge?
The Dorset summer reading challenge encourages children aged 4–11 to visit their local library, borrow books, and collect free stickers through a special reward booklet. Featuring artwork from award‑winning illustrator Dapo Adeola, Story Garden inspires outdoor creativity with illustrations of book golems, page‑winged butterflies and more.
Supporting literacy and nature-themed fun
Now in its 26th year, this challenge blends literacy, nature, and wellbeing—it’s a chance for children to avoid the so-called “summer dip” in reading. Research from The Reading Agency found past challenges boosted reading enjoyment and maintained literacy levels over school holidays.
Dorset Council’s Cabinet Member for Culture, Cllr Ryan Hope, commented:
“We’re really excited… combine a love of reading while encouraging young minds to explore nature and creativity”.
Expanding access with new partnerships
This year’s Dorset summer reading challenge benefits from The Reading Agency’s recent £1.5 million grant via the Julia Rausing Trust. The funding aims to reach disadvantaged families, including automatic sign-up in schools, boosting participation across the UK .
