New Mural in Poole Celebrates Brownsea Island's Wildlife

A vibrant new mural inspired by the natural beauty surrounding Poole, including Brownsea Island’s famous red squirrels, has been unveiled in the town centre...

Commissioned by Poole BID, the mural, located on Towngate Bridge near Poole train station, was created by local artist Kizzibcreative. The artwork features a variety of species native to the area, such as gannets, sandwich terns, and, of course, the red squirrel, which has become a symbol of Brownsea Island...

Kizzi shared her inspiration behind the piece: “This mural is a tribute to the majestic gannets that grace Dorset’s coastline. Often misunderstood as 'greedy,' gannets are actually graceful and romantic seabirds known for their stunning beauty in flight and their courtship rituals, where they exchange gifts. They are striking with their brilliant white feathers and soft yellow heads, and play a crucial role in the coastal ecosystem. Through this artwork, I hope to challenge their negative perception and highlight the importance of protecting these remarkable seabirds.”

Kizzi's mural was crafted using 100% recycled materials provided by Tomorrow Artist, with assistance from Chelsea May Illustrations. The project was supported by Poole BID, alongside match funding from The Dolphin Poole, Legal and General, and BCP Council’s Community Infrastructure Levy.

Jacqui Rock, Poole BID Lead, praised the mural, saying: “We believe that public art enhances Poole as a destination for both residents and visitors, fostering community pride while also supporting the town’s cultural and artistic identity. It’s wonderful to see the final result of this year-long project, which perfectly reflects Poole’s heritage.”

John Grinnell, Centre Manager of The Dolphin Poole, expressed his satisfaction with the mural, noting that it fits into the broader vision of transforming the shopping centre into a welcoming space for the community. He added that the mural has greatly improved the appearance of an area that has "needed some TLC."

This latest mural not only adds to the town’s artistic landscape but also serves as a reminder of the rich wildlife and natural beauty surrounding Poole.
